Astrological Houses: 1-6

Picture

An astrological chart is composed of 12 houses and each house governs a different area of life. Planets placed in the house or aspecting the cusp, the zodiac sign on the cusp, the ruler of the house and the dispositor of the house will have an impact. The four angles of the chart: ascendant, IC, descendant and MC have importance in psychological astrology.

In psychological astrology, the house represents the setting or domain of life. In making an astrological sentence for interpretation, the planet is the ‘who’, the zodiac sign is the adjective describing the planet, the 'how' and the house is the 'where'. For example if you have Aries in Jupiter in your ninth house, one interpretation is Bold (Aries) philosophies (Jupiter) regarding foreign travel (ninth house). If you have the Sun in Gemini in the eleventh house, one interpretation is articulate (Gemini) individual (Sun) in large groups (eleventh house).

The more planets you have in a house, the more significant are the matters of the house in your life. If you have four or more planets in a house, this is a stellium and may indicate special talents and a creative intelligence.

An accidental dignity occurs when a planet is located in the house that has an affinity with the zodiac sign it rules; for example Sun in the 1st house or Moon in the 4th house. This strengthens the planets positive expression and power in a person's life, allowing the higher potential of the planet to more easily manifest in that area of life.

First House

The first house governs our physical body. Our general health and vitality are shown by the nature of aspects to the ascendant (the cusp of the first house). The ascendant sign and specific planets that aspect the ascendant or are physically placed in the first house will influence our public persona, the first impressions we make on people. The sign on the ascendant, planets that aspect it and the planets in the first house also influence physical appearance and demeanour and our general public attitude. These angular planets also have an important influence on our nature. For example, a person with Jupiter conjunct the ascendant will come across as jovial, optimistic, and enthusiastic. These people are usually philosophical, with a deeper interest in learning and gaining wisdom. They also seem to be naturally lucky and protected from harm, usually because they expect the best from life.

Angelina Jolie is an American actress known worldwide for her beauty, sensual nature and charisma. In 2009, she was named by Vanity Fair’s readers as the most beautiful woman in the world with a whopping 58% of the vote, the runner up only had 9% of the vote. In 2006 Angelina was on the cover of People’s Magazine as the Most Beautiful Person in the world. It is very fitting that she has Venus conjunct her ascendant exact at 28 degrees Cancer. The Part of Fortune at 28 degrees Taurus makes an exact sextile. Uranus at 28 degrees Libra makes an exact square to the ascendant, and gives her a rebel persona. For instance, in her younger years she was famous for doing things that other people found shocking such as wearing a blood vial necklace with the blood of Billy Bob Thornton or making out with her brother. In this interview, and video she discusses the need for finding her voice. She wanted to feel free to experiment with new experiences in order to feel like she was living her life to her full potential. She feels like she has that little bit of fire and trouble that was directed in the right way and it was a force for good and brave. In her own words:

"It wasn’t a need to be destructive or rebellious—it’s that need to find a full voice, to push open the walls around you," she says. "You want to be free. And as you start to feel that you are being corralled into a certain life, you kind of push against it. It may come out very strange, it may be interpreted wrong, but you’re trying to find out who you are.”

Halle Berry is an Academy award winning actress known for her exquisite, exotic beauty. Prior to becoming an actress she was a beauty pageant winner and a fashion model. She was 1st runner-up in the Miss USA Pageant and finished in 6th place in the Miss World Pageant in 1986. She has her North Node exactly conjunct the Ascendant, the Part of Fortune in the first house, Jupiter closely sextiling her ascendant, and her Sun closely squaring the ascendant, making it easier to gain recognition for her beauty and to promote her talents. The North Node on the ascendant shows self- confidence and original style. Ascendant ruler Venus is in Cancer and makes an exact opposition to the MC at 29 Capricorn, giving her the inclination towards beauty pageants, modelling and acting. Neptune making an opposition to the ascendant gives her an added dose of glamour, while the close sextile of Mars accentuates sex appeal.  Uranus makes a close trine to the ascendant, a close conjunction to Pluto and an opposition to the MC ruler Saturn, signifying she could be a trailblazer and make an important breakthrough. In fact, as of the year 2020 she remains the first and only Black woman to win the Oscar for Best Actress in Monster's Ball released in 2001.

Bella Hadid is a supermodel who was declared the most beautiful woman in the world in 2019. This is according to the science of the Golden Ratio of Beauty Phi, which some believe to be a measure of physical perfection. It is calculated by taking various ratios of the face into consideration (assessing symmetry and proportion) and her score is 94%. She has Venus in Virgo in the 12th house (where it is favourable due to gaining accidental dignity in the 12th house) and conjunct her ascendant by 4 degrees; the angularity to the ascendant degree strengthens its characteristics in the person's physical appearance. Venus is in its fall in Virgo but fortunately its condition is ameliorated  through a mutual exchange with Mercury in Libra where both planets can function as if they were in their own sign. Venus forms a square with Pluto which is close to the 4th house cusp and therefore angular and more prominent. The Venus-Pluto square tends to add sexiness, sensuality and intensity of emotional expression. Venus forms a close trine with Jupiter giving her optimism and confidence about her appearance and ability to succeed in life. Jupiter trine the ascendant by 1 degree is an immense blessing, like a guardian angel that is ever present, and goes a long way to counteract other difficulties as shown in the chart. Venus squares the MC by 1 degree and since it is also in mutual exchange with Mercury as ruler of the 10th house, these factors incline her career to have a Venusian flavour.

Bella stands out because she has three fallen placements which have no assistance to strengthen them: Sun in Libra, Jupiter in Capricorn and Saturn in Aries. There are no planets in their own sign or exalted. Nevertheless, her hard work, business savvy and ability to connect with people have brought her success. Sometimes planets in fall work harder to prove to the world they can succeed. Several times she has won the title of Model of the Year from different sources and has nearly 30 million followers on instagram. At the same time, the challenges associated with the fallen planets is felt;  for instance, she details her struggles with depression despite her success and the quality of opportunities presented to her. The Moon is in the 12th house but conjunct the ascendant by 1 degree. The moon tends to wear her heart on her sleeve. Thus, Bella has spoken about her insecurities publicly, such as not feeling powerful when modelling for Victoria's Secret, and having difficulties maintaining her emotional health while working with the demands of high profile photographers. The ascendant ruler Mercury makes an opposition with Saturn and both Mercury and Saturn are conjunct the nodal axis; this inclines towards having a harsh inner critic and extremely high standards for oneself.  One of Bella's karmic missions is to learn to cultivate more self-compassion and to be happy with where she is at the moment; to recognize that she is enough.

Leonardo DiCaprio has Pluto at 8 Libra conjunct the ascendant 5 degrees at 3 Libra. He is known for the intensity of his emotional expression, which the Pluto-Moon conjunction near the ascendant reflects. Having four planets in the first house is a stellium and tends to cause the person to stand out from the crowd, potentially making it easier to receive attention and accolades. My favourite performance of his was in Titanic with his romantic but heartbreaking performance as Jack Dawson. He falls in love with a first class passenger named Rose Dewitt Bukater but their relationship was ill fated. Venus ruled Libra is the sign of love, romance and partnership, so it fits that with Pluto in Libra at the ascendant that he is best known for his lead role in a transformational love story. Titanic was the first film in history to earn 1 billion dollars, in that sense it was revolutionary and Leo does have Uranus in the first house. It was nominated for 14 Oscars and won 11 of them, including best picture, therefore it can be concluded that the movie penetrated deeply into the heart of the collective consciousness, leaving a long lasting legacy.

In all of his films, he employs method acting which requires him to stay in a character role even when not filming so he can truly get into the character’s psyche. Thus all of his performances seem to be marked with the intensity and power of Pluto. It is interesting that he won his first golden globe for his performance in The Aviator, a biography of Howard Hughes. Howard had obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessions and compulsions are both represented by Pluto.

Cat Stevens is a British singer songwriter and musician. Fitting for a musical artist, he has Neptune conjunct the ascendant 1 degree at 9-10 degrees Libra. There were points in his life where he got depressed and became alcoholic; manifesting the escapist side to Neptune. In 1970 he released the album Tea for the Tillerman and the single Wild World which went gold in the U.S. Several of his albums stayed at the top of the charts and went gold after that. When he was swimming at a beach, he nearly drowned (Neptune represents bodies of water) but he felt that divine intervention saved him. His brother gave him a copy of the Koran soon after that and he felt deeply moved by it. From that time, he converted to Islam and became very spiritual (Neptune represents connection with God and spirituality). He began doing spiritual lectures and religious music for a while but eventually returned to secular music. In 2005, he was named "Songwriter of the Year" and awarded "Song of the Year" by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers for his 1967 hit, "The First Cut is the Deepest." This award recognized the fact that four other artists had sang his song and made hits out of it.  The exact square from Mercury at 9 degrees Cancer assists with his ability to write moving lyrics and opposition from the part of fortune at 13 degrees Aries helps in achieving recognition for his efforts.

Joseph Pilates was a German physical fitness trainer who invented the Pilates method. Physically he was fit, participating in skiing, bodybuilding, boxing, diving, yoga, Zen, tai-chi, kung Fu, and gymnastics. At one point he became an instructor in boxing, wrestling and self defense. He even posed for anatomical charts because his physique was perfectly chiseled. Joseph had Uranus conjunct the ascendant at 26-27 degrees Virgo. Uranus represents innovative discoveries, inventions, trends, products and services. The ascendant represents the appearance and Virgo represents health, exercise regimens and taking care of the physical body. He not only came up with the exercise moves but also that he engineered the equipment needed for the practice. Characteristic of Uranus’s pioneering nature, he had over 20 patents cited, having invented many pieces of apparatus relating to improving the strength and alignment of the human body. A couple of examples of his inventions are the V-Bed (June 1930): a bed that is in a V shape for sleeping. Joe advertised this, “for perfect relaxation while resting and sleeping, showing anatomical balance in every position. He invented The Sitting Chair (Feb. 1930): an ergonomically designed chair with a spring back and a slanted seat to support the low back, legs, and knees, it was designed to correct poor posture. He was a member of the Chartered Institute of American Inventors. He was a visionary in the field of physical fitness and revolutionized the way we exercise and develop proper posture. The close square from Mercury and trine from Pluto depicts his authorship of several thought-provoking books which transformed the field of physical fitness. A complete list of his books can be found on his website.

Supermodel Study

Since physical appearance is reflected by the ascendant, I thought it would be insightful to examine the astrological indicators of supermodels.  I located the birthdays of over 100 supermodels from the 1940s to the 2000s but only 26 of them had reliable birth times so that the ASC and MC/10th house could be reliably assessed. All supermodels had an A or AA rating from Astrodata Bank with two B rating exceptions.

Supermodels included were Gisele Bündchen, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Cheryl Tiegs, Lauren Hutton, Carla Bruni, Jean Shrimpton (Rodden rating B), Anja Rubik, Miranda Kerr, Milla Jovovich, Rebecca Romijn, Marisa Berenson, Isabella Rossellini, Estelle Lefébure, Sharon Tate, Bridgitte Bardot, Caroline de Maigret,  Antonella Moccia, Dorian Leigh, Brooke Shields (Rodden Rating B), Margot (Marjaux) Hemingway, Christy Turlington, Valeria Mazza and Laetitia Casta.

Being a supermodel is a specialized career that is difficult to qualify for because of a standardized type of look and body type. On the other hand, I believe beauty is subjective and in the eye of the beholder. Therefore, I hypothesized that supermodels would be expected to share certain astrological similarities whereas in a random sample of beautiful female celebrities, there would not be the same expectation.

Results

Although a small sample size, the fact that 8/26  (31%) of the supermodels had Cancer on the ascendant is noteworthy.

22/26 supermodels had Venus as ruler of the 10th house or Venus aspecting the ruler of the 10th house. The 10th house and the MC represents career, so Venus being associated with it would give a push towards a career in beauty, fashion, modelling and entertainment.

19/26 supermodels had the Venus-Neptune aspect. This combination of planets brings glamour, sophistication and is associated with fashion design. Venus represents beauty and Neptune adds the ethereal or magical touch when it aspects Venus.

17/26 had the Venus-Pluto aspect. This combination of planets brings power and transformation to beauty. This is fitting as supermodels transform the collective consciousness of what is beautiful from decade to decade. Pluto adds a depth, mystery and sense of intrigue to the physical appearance and personal style.

Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid each have birth times available with a Roden Rating of AA although there is controversy as to whether they are supermodels in the traditional sense. Both do not have Venus aspecting the MC or MC ruler nor a Venus-Neptune aspect. They both have Venus-Pluto aspects.

This study does shed light into the allure of the supermodel. However, limitations should be kept in mind. With most of the supermodels birth times being unavailable, it is impossible to have a fully accurate idea as to the sign on their ascendant or the Venus-MC-10th house connections. It is possible that with a bigger sample the results could be different. Similarly, the majority of models had Venus-Neptune and/or Venus-Pluto aspects in this sample but the percentage could change if the sample was expanded. At the same time, in expanding the sample size to analyze these aspects, the selection is no longer unbiased because there are thousands of supermodels throughout history who have known birthdays (you don't need a birth time to calculate these aspects). It would be very time consuming to analyze these aspects for all of them. If I were to select the top 100 myself, I would introduce a bias and the results may not be as reliable. Fortunately, the current sample does not have personal bias in selection of who was included because selection was solely based on having an accurate birth time.

Second House

The second house governs personal resources, value and belief system, confidence and self-esteem. Planets connected with the second house reveal personal talents and skills that can be developed both to increase our confidence and to earn money. For example, Mars connected to this house can reveal a talent for competitive sports or intense physical activity. The house is also what makes us feel safe. For example, with Jupiter connected to the second house, gaining religious knowledge may make a person feel protected. This house represents what we desire and appreciate in life and eventually what kind of things or circumstances in life we hope to enjoy. For example, a person with Mercury connected with the second house likes to learn and communicate, they may desire to be a well- respected teacher in their field.

The ideals we cherish and our perception of how we would like to be seen are reflected here. The second house gives us clues as to how we will earn and spend our money. What is our attitude towards giving and receiving? Does earning money come easily or will we have to face a fair share of obstacles? Material security and comfort and stability are highlighted.
Let us look at how each sign and planet behaves when influencing the 2nd house. If you have a sign intercepted in the 2nd house, that sign also influences the 2nd house. Additional factors for the 2nd house to consider would be the strength and favourability of the planets in the 2nd house and the aspects made to the 2nd house cusp, 2nd house ruler and 2nd house dispositor from other planets.

Aries or Mars in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd house, there might be a desire to be an entrepreneur. If employed by others you need autonomy and independence and do not do well having to report to others. Watch out for a desire to be impulsive when spending money or to make investments that are too risky.

Taurus or Venus in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd house, there might be a desire to have stability and predictability in your profession. A high income is quite important to you for the material comforts it can afford. You do well in professions that deal with finance or business or in the beauty, art or music industries. You may not like to take risks with your money.

Gemini or Mercury in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd house variety is the key. You are a good multi-tasker and may have multiple streams of income. Because you can get bored easily, you need a job with constant intellectual stimulation and a changing atmosphere or role. You do well in professions which require good communication skills, left brained thinking, math, science or engineering or you may have a skill for languages. You are happy spending money on courses, books, lectures, seminars or anything that expands your knowledge base.

Cancer or Moon in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd house, material security is of the utmost importance to you and you are a good saver. You may excel in professions requiring nurturing, making others feel at home, working with families or dealing with people’s emotions. There may be an interest in professions requiring the management of other people’s money, particularly in real estate. Or since Cancer is a water sign, your job may have something to do with water.

Leo or Sun in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd house, you are authoritative and do best in careers which let you shine. You are someone who needs positive feedback for your work and to be recognized for your accomplishments. You have a strong desire to rise to the top of your field. You do well in professions that give you some type of an audience or at least one which allows for working with people or the public.

Virgo or Mercury in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd house you do well in earning money by using your logical thought processes. Math, science, and detail oriented or analytical research may be a strength. You have good communication skills and get your point across in a practical way. You may also do well in health or medical positions, positions dealing with physical health, exercise and nutrition or positions that allow you to be of service to others in practical ways.

Libra or Venus in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd house, you have an innate sense of balance which tends to carry over to your spending habits, although you can occasionally splurge. In earning money, you do well in positions that make sure people are treated equally and fairly. You also may do well in planning or organizing social functions as you have an eye for beauty and a sense of how to relate to others with diplomacy and tact. This skill may be put to good use in professions requiring intimate relationship building such as working with couples.

Scorpio or Mars/Pluto in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd house, you love to get at the truth. You are the natural detective and positions requiring investigation, research, analysis and transformation are your strong suits. You are attracted to digging beyond the surface and getting to the heart of the matter. You are excellent at ferreting out information that other people would rather keep hidden. You need to be absorbed in what you are doing and derive meaning from it.

Sagittarius or Jupiter in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd house, you desire to expand your knowledge base. Ways to earn money include publishing, writing, travel-related jobs, jobs in higher education, teaching and jobs related to justice or the law. You tend to be quite generous in spending money on others.

Capricorn or Saturn in the 2nd house: These factors influencing the 2nd house inclines towards earning money in traditional means with an eye for saving and investing money. You are likely quite frugal and do not tend to make major purchases without lots of research. Jobs dealing with finance and business are suited to you. One of your best qualities is your penchant for committing to a job and working very hard, your work ethic is admirable to those around you.

Aquarius or Saturn/ Aquarius in the 2nd house: These factors influencing the 2nd house incline towards careers in technology, new fields in their infancy where new discoveries are waiting to be made and all types of original and future oriented thought. There may be unconventional attitudes towards earning and spending money. Aquarius is a humanitarian sign and may gear towards jobs in social services, social justice, in non-profits, charities or helping the underprivileged. You also tend to work well in large groups.

Pisces or Neptune/ Jupiter in the 2nd house: With these factors influencing the 2nd, you tend to generously give to causes you care about and to help the underprivileged. Because you are empathetic, jobs working in rehabilitation, with those less fortunate or those in emotional or physical distress are also suited to you. Other talents might be poetry, dancing, the visual and performing arts.

Oprah Winfrey has Venus conjunct the Sun at critical degree 8 Aquarius and also an exalted Mercury at 19 degrees Aquarius. Critical degrees add extra strength to a planet. The Sun conjunct Venus is an aspect of material blessing, personal charm, magnetism and excellent aesthetic sense, these people know to how to enjoy the finer things in life and they tend to attract money easily. The part of fortune is placed in the second house. Mercury represents communications, teaching, broadcasting, and media. Therefore, this makes her an eloquent public speaker, easily able to capture the audience’s attention. The ruler of the house Uranus is placed in the seventh house which usually indicates excellent interpersonal skills and is suitable for conducting insightful interviews as she asks the right questions to get at the information she wants to know.

Uranus is placed in Cancer, a sign that intuitively understands the needs of people and can make people feel safe and comfortable, as well, Cancer's ruling sign the Moon at 4 degrees Sagittarius makes a close sextile to the second house cusp. The Oprah Winfrey show was  influential in a socio-cultural sense because it tackled important societal issues in addition to interesting celebrity interviews. The house ruler is Uranus which rules Aquarius, and Mercury, Sun and Venus are in Aquarius, a sign that loves to help underprivileged people. Oprah’s generous nature has been widely noted. Since 1997, The Oprah Winfrey Angel Network has given millions to college scholarships, built homes for people without one, built schools in third world countries and distributed children’s books in various parts of the world. She has won several humanitarian awards including: The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, humanity award 2007, The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award/Honorary Academy Award, 2011 and the United Nations Association of the United States of America--Global Humanitarian Action Award in 2004.

Third house

The third house governs communications, logic, short trips, broadcasting, letters, siblings, relatives, science, math, languages, our immediate environment and elementary and high school. This is the house where we analyze information as objectively as possible. How does our brain respond to the information it receives? Are we quick thinkers or do we prefer to take our time in formulating responses? How is the thinking style-is it more scientific and logical or more influenced by creativity and intuition? Planets connected with the third house reflect what we notice about our environment. For example Neptune in the third could be trying to give a deeper meaning to everyday events, looking for synchronous coincidences in his/her life. Their interests are likely more artistic and/or metaphysical. Planets connected with this house also represent your relationship with your siblings and relatives. To illustrate, if you have Neptune in this house, you may have a brother or sister who enjoys yoga, meditation, spiritual interests, or is a talented musician. On the other hand, they could be escapists and unable to cope with daily events, instead turning to drugs and alcohol to relieve the pressure. Alternatively, your relationship with them may be spiritual and centered around doing these types of activities or it could be somewhat vague and unreliable, perhaps they moved away for long periods growing up or due to conflicting schedules you didn’t see them very often.

Oscar Wilde has Mercury at 13 degrees Scorpio and Mars at 3 degrees Sagittarius in the third house. The ruler of the house is Pluto which is placed in Taurus in the 8th house. Mercury is in accidental dignity in the third house as it rules Gemini, the natural sign of the third house. This means that Mercury gains strength from being here and is able to function at an optimal level. In his studies at University at Oxford, he won the Newdigate prize for his poem, “Ravenna and a First Class in both his "Mods" and "Greats" by his examiners. After he graduated, he spent a year giving 140 lectures on aesthetics in 260 days in the United States. In between his lectures he met notable people such as Henry Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Walt Whitman.

Oscar published two collections of children’s stories, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and several plays for the theatre, many of which were very well received by critics and the public. The ruler of the third house Pluto is in its detriment sign Taurus, however is placed in accidental dignity in the 8th house, is retrograde and closely opposes the third house cusp, so it is of mixed condition. On one hand he received a good deal of fame from his writings and they left a meaningful legacy but on the other hand, Pluto can imply aggression coming to him from others. Mars is also in the third house receiving a close quincunx from Pluto, and while it gave him the ambition and drive to write all his stories, Mars represents aggression, including aggression relating to sexual matters. The eighth house represents sex, the cusp of his third house contains the sign Scorpio, which symbolizes sex and also the third house contains Mercury in Scorpio suggesting that sexual themes may play an important role in his communications. People thought The Picture of Dorian Gray contained homosexual themes, thus he was arrested for gross indecency and sentenced to two years of hard labour.

Fourth House

The fourth house governs home, real estate, family, childhood, genealogy, domestic affairs, nurturing, security, memories, psychological roots, subconscious mind and parents. Often, the planets connected with this house are reflective of the atmosphere in which we were raised and the characteristics of our parents. The planets in a person’s fourth house will show their perception of their parents, not necessarily who they are. Each sibling has a different fourth house but shares the same parents, thus each sibling’s view and relationship with their parents is different. The parent could be displaying a wide variety of behaviours but what the child notices about them is reflected by the fourth house. For example, Pluto here could show that a girl perceived that her parents were too overprotective and tried to exert too much control over her life decisions. She may have had many power struggles with one or both of them. It could also represent a parent who was perceived as very Plutonian- powerful, intense, charismatic, obsessive, having strong willpower.  Her brother may have had Mercury connected with this house and what he notices is the excellent oratory or writing skills of his parents. Perhaps a parent was excellent at science or math and they taught many things about it to their child. Or they could have spent a lot of time discussing abstract topics or engaging in discussions. Both children picked up on such different sides of their parents.

The fourth house cusp (IC) is the lowest point on the natal chart, likewise it is the most private part of us. Planets that conjunct this point have a markedly strong effect on our psyche and subconscious mind. A person with Pluto on the IC is deep and reflective, and they have a penetrating insight into human behaviour and motivation. Their ability to uncover other people’s secrets and unconscious mind is very strong. These traits in a person may or may not be visible to other people. At the same time, if it is closely conjunct the IC and not just in the house, it may be somewhat visible due to it making an opposition with the MC which represents public reputation.

Let us use Marlon Brando’s chart as an example. He was a famous Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe winning actor in the 50s, 60s and 70s. He is known for his rugged good looks, likeable charm and rebellious character. He had Uranus in Pisces conjunct the fourth house cusp 1 degree. Uranus represents the rebel, with or without the cause; someone who is independent, unique, genius, eccentric and thinks outside the box. Uranian types are unconventional and set new innovative trends. In 1953, Brando acted in The Wild One where he played the classic rebel without a cause Johnny Strabbler. When asked, “What are you rebelling against?”, Johnny replies, “What have ya got?”. This street rebel image influenced the style of icons Elvis Presley and James Dean.

Uranus is also the planet of humanitarian efforts and causes. He lent his support to Blacks in the civil rights movement in the 60s, giving a lot of money and time to the demonstrations. Uranus being in Pisces gives him compassion and the desire to fight for the underdog. He won his second Oscar for The Godfather, however he refused to accept it and sent someone to state his reasons for the refusal, mainly to protest how Native Americans were being portrayed on film, here we can see the real life rebel with a cause. The eccentricity of Uranus came out with his difficult on set behaviour, refusal to adhere to scripts, being aloof with those on set, having too many affairs and eating too much. Uranus being in such close aspect with both the IC and MC promises sudden, and unexpected changes and reversals of fortune with home and family as well as his career. In 1990 his son Christian shot and killed his half sister’s boyfriend (Brando’s daughter, Cheyenne). Cheyenne committed suicide five years later due to depression. In the 90s his career also suffered due to his morbid obesity, liver disease, diabetes and congestive heart failure. This was a dramatic change from his once stunning physique and excellent health.  However, characteristic of Uranus, he had huge career swings throughout his life. He was a big box office hit in the 50s but by the end of the 60s his films were not doing well. Suddenly, he got a huge career rebirth in 1972 with The Godfather.

When planets in your fourth house are activated by transit they will have a more marked influence than other planets due to it being on an angle. These transits usually center around domestic affairs and familial issues. On May 16, 1990, when Christian Brando shot Cheyenne’s boyfriend at Marlon Brando’s residence, transiting Mars was at 19 degrees Pisces, making an exact conjunction to Marlon’s natal Uranus at 19 Pisces and Mars was just 1 degree from his IC at 20 degrees Pisces, activating the natal promise of a shocking domestic event. Natally, Marlon has a 1 degree sextile between Mars and Uranus representing unexpected outbursts of violence and rage.

Fifth House

The fifth house governs creativity, romance, pleasure, games, recreation and leisure, children, fun, speculation and gambling, self-expression, drama, acting, theatre, and hobbies. The fifth house represents the part of us that would like attention and praise for our effort, the type of thing we like to be in the spotlight for. Someone with many planets in the fifth house has a psychologically deep need to be center stage and special in some domain.

Creativity takes on many forms, it can be scientific, for example, someone with Uranus or Mercury here may achieve influence for a discovery or innovative product. Or it can also be artistic, musical, or in connection with beauty. Venus or Neptune here can produce excellent musicians, fashion designers, makeup artists, actors and actresses. Planets connected with the fifth house reveal what kinds of activities we do for fun and leisure. The Moon may suggest baking or cooking is relaxing for a person.

Planets in the fifth house describe a person’s attitude towards romance and what types of people they like to date. A person with Neptune in the fifth may wear rose colored glasses and put the people they are interested in on pedestals. They also may read much more romantic interest from their partner than is actually there. Alternatively, they could be attracted to Neptunian partners- poets, painters, artists, musicians and photographers.

Children are represented by the fifth house and the planets here could reveal the types of children we have. For example, Mars could denote a very assertive, energetic child who likes to play sports and is competitive. The planets could also represent our feelings about being a parent, Jupiter may want to give the child as many nice things as they can and may not give enough discipline. On the other hand, Saturn can make a person feel that their child is restrictive in some way and/or they may find it important to instill a sense of hard work and duty into their children. In sum, the fifth house represents what we are putting out into society. This could be a great new product, a useful service, an insightful book, an engaging T.V show or raising children who positively impact their community.

Shirley Temple Black was a child film actress, singer and dancer who starred in many popular movies during the Great Depression. She was named #18 Actress, The American Film Institutes 50 Greatest Screen Legends and in 2006 was given the lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild. She has Jupiter conjunct Mercury in Aries as well as Sun in Taurus in the fifth house. Jupiter is the chart ruler (ruler of the ascendant) making fifth house affairs very important in her life. Jupiter was evident in her appearance as bright eyes, golden corkscrew curls, dimples and a sweet voice. She had a need to be admired by the public, be center stage and feel special in her performances. Jupiter represents luck, optimism and cheer so it is appropriate that Franklin Roosevelt called her "Little Miss Miracle" for lifting the public’s spirits during the great depression. He commented, "As long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right". He continued “During this depression, when the spirit of the people is lower than at any other time, it is a splendid thing that, for just 15 cents, an American can go to a movie and look at the smiling face of a baby and forget his troubles”.

The ruler of the MC, Mercury is also placed in the fifth house suggesting that fifth house activities play a direct role in her career, children and acting are symbolized by the fifth house and the MC represents career, perfect for a child film actress. She started in movies and in dance classes at age 3 and by the time she was 12 she had been in 43 movies. The Sun is in accidental dignity in the fifth house as it rules Leo, the natural sign of the fifth house. This gives the Sun optimal functioning, bestowing on a person the potential to be a star, great creativity, a talent for drama and performance and an ability to engage an audience and earn their applause. The ruler of the house Mars is in Pisces in the third house. The third house represents media, communications, broadcasting and film. Pisces gives the excellent artistic talent, she was able to sing, dance and act equally well. She won a special Academy Award “Outstanding Personality of 1934 for her song and dance routine On the Good Ship Lollipop" in the movie Bright Eyes. She used her popularity as a child star to gain herself a position as a U.S foreign diplomat in her later years, her excellent communication skills were put to good use. She used her platform to speak about the aged, environmental concerns and the plight of refugees.

With regards to her children, her son Charles is a Pisces, recall that the ruler of her fifth house is Mars which is placed in Pisces. Her daughter Lori is an Aries, the sign ruled by Mars.

 Sixth House

The sixth house governs health, illness, attention to detail, mundane affairs, routines, jobs (as opposed to career in the 10th), work ethic, service, realistic thinking, reasoning, organization and responsibilities. The sixth house governs all practical matters of daily living; bills, eating and hygiene for example. Planets connected with this house represent our functioning and attitude towards our chores, the moon here may have an emotional need to keep things tidy. Having Saturn here can make a person detail oriented. This house represents our attitudes towards service, assisting others in a humble way and often without recognition.

The sixth house represents jobs and usually what we desire in a job or skills that we have that could be put to good use in a job. It could also represent our relationship to our coworkers, supervisors and our attitude towards our workplace. Unequal relationships and power imbalances are shown here, for example people we work for or who work for us. The sixth house represents health, illness and disease, planets connected with it may show body parts that could give trouble at some point in life. For example, Saturn or Capricorn may show arthritis or knee issues.

Let us revisit Marlon Brando’s natal chart but this time analyze the sixth house. He has Taurus on the cusp of this house with Venus its ruler placed in Taurus in the sixth. Venus is in mixed condition because on one hand it gains strength from being in its sign of rulership and being the sixth ruler placed in the sixth house. On the other hand it is weakened by being in accidental fall in the sixth house, Virgo is the sign of Venus’s fall and the sixth is Virgo’s house. We see that at different times in his life, he experienced its strengths and weaknesses. When he was young, he was handsome, healthy and had a chiseled body, women worldwide would swoon over his physique. When he got older, he became morbidly obese, and suffered from liver disease, diabetes and congestive heart failure. Taurus’ body parts are the thyroid gland, throat, neck, larynx, vocal cords, tonsils and tongue. Venus in Taurus in particular can go overboard with eating tasty food and indulging in too many rich foods, sweets, chocolates and foods that are only to be eaten on special occasions. The nature of Venus is beauty, sensual pleasure, relaxing and having a good time, Venus is not comfortable in the sixth house of discipline, austerity, regimen, exercise and work.

The first house also represents health and the physical body so it makes sense to analyze it as well. We notice that Jupiter is in its sign of rulership Sagittarius and Jupiter also rules the first house. The good side is that it can give a robust constitution, and general good health if one exercises regularly and eats nutritiously, this is what happened when he was young. However, the downside is that Jupiter is the planet of abundance and excess and in the first house this can mean excess weight if people aren’t careful. They can also fail to realize the body’s limits, being overly optimistic and believing that they will never get sick.

Another potentially problematic factor is that Jupiter makes an exact 0 degrees and 0 minutes parallel aspect with Venus, it is very powerful as this is the tightest an aspect can be. In itself, this is not necessarily bad, if people with this Venus-Jupiter aspect can develop discipline they can enjoy the wealth, luck and blessings it brings in moderation. It is an aspect of artistic talent and can bring success in theatre and movies. Parallels function very much like conjunctions as it blends the two planets significations. Unfortunately, Brando did not cultivate enough discipline to enjoy the good karma of this aspect for his whole life. On the downside, Jupiter conjunct Venus is an aspect that finds it hard not to overindulge in sensual pleasures and entertainment. They want the finest, most luxurious things and do not deny themselves pleasure.
