This video addresses the role of astrology in communicating the nature of karma one will face in this lifetime. When one truly removes the individual sense of 'I' ; the personal ego and sense of doership, karma is transcended and the transiting planets will no longer affect that person's life. This enlightened state is known as self-realization and is why the charts of saints and yogis cannot be read in the same way as the rest of the population. There is no karma if there is no 'I' to experience it.
Self-realization involves a complete surrender to God's will instead of hoping for the accomplishment of one's personal wishes and goals. Further, it requires you to let go of the tendency to label events as desirable and undesirable and to let your happiness be dependent on how many desirable conditions you have in your life. For example, to be: good looking, healthy, successful, intelligent, wealthy, influential, own a home, famous, a good spouse or parent, a foreign traveller, or in a personally fulfilling career. The list is endless. The world's conditioning of what you need to live a happy life will keep you trapped in samsara for a very long time. If advertisers couldn't keep us in a state of lack, of feeling not good enough, we would never buy what they are selling. We are subconsciously conditioned to believe that we are the doers in our life, and therefore that we control our own destiny. To believe that we are not the authors in our life story can be hard to accept for most people, invoking fear and anxiety. However, it is the first step of awakening from this cosmic dream.
As an astrologer, I take great care in determining what to tell my clients about their karma, to make the best use of their strengths and talents, and to pursue directions that are in alignment with their authentic self. To point out sources of difficulty, and suggestions for how to navigate them. I provide a sense of comfort in difficult times, a validation of thought and emotion in response to the naturally occurring life cycles that we all experience. Part of the reason for this is to reduce the sense of loneliness and isolation that comes with thinking you are the only one who goes through these types of feelings and experiences. Astrology can be used as a tool for self-healing and self-compassion this way.
Ramana Maharshi states, "all activities and events that a body is to go through are determined at the time of conception." The practice of astrology over more than two decades has brought me much closer to an experiential understanding of the truth that I am not the doer than I would have arrived at without it. This is because I have seen thousands of living examples of natal charts in action, and how the planets have influenced their real world experiences over the lifespan. It is compelling evidence that accurate predictions could not be possible if we were the doers. It is only because we are not the doers, that events like marriage, child birth, and death as well as transformative turning points at different phases in life can be determined from the time one is born.
There can be a partial surrender and removal of 'I' intellectually and this is the predicament of the majority of spiritual seekers who find themselves confined to the cycle of reincarnation; being subject to the laws of karma as seen in the birth chart. This experience of karma brings pain and suffering. To get off this never-ending wheel of birth and death, the spiritual understanding must come from the heart and be lived out on a daily basis. The challenge is, how do you transform this intellectual knowledge into a heart knowing, and therefore live your life in accordance with it rather than just discussing the principles behind it? Ramana's answer is in self-inquiry, to go within and ask 'who am I'?
