Out of Bounds Planets

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away".

- Henry David Thoreau
, Walden

Introduction

Planets that are out of bounds have been documented to behave in an outstanding manner, such that the characteristics of the planet are especially well developed, extreme in functioning or in some cases contribute to abnormal behaviour in the domain of the planet. By definition, an OOB planet is one that exceeds 23 degrees 27 minutes either North or South of the equator. The more OOB planets a person has and the further declination each planet is, the more creative thinking they display and the more their interests, values and preferences differ from those prominent in the society in which they live.

On the positive side, OOB planets are visionary, inventive, inspirational, original and deeply cherish their freedom of thought and action, especially in the area governed by the planet. On the negative side, OOB planets can contribute to insanity, abnormal thoughts/ feelings and complete disregard for the law. The Sun, Saturn and Neptune will never be OOB. Jupiter very rarely goes OOB and even then does not go too much past. The Moon will go OOB most frequently and reaches a maximum of nearly 29 degrees when the North Node is at 0 degrees Aries every 18.6 years.  Mercury, Venus and Mars are next in frequency and usually go to a maximum of 27 degrees but it should be noted that both Venus and Mars have on rare occasions gone to 28 degrees. Uranus and Pluto do not go much beyond 23 degrees 27 minutes and when they do they have generational effects. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of OOB planets by examining the effects they have on people who were born with them.

Method

I created a sample of 165 famous people from the entertainment, science, literature, corporate and visual arts fields who have made commendable contributions to society. For comparison, I included 40 infamous people who had committed serious criminal acts (gruesome murderers and rapists) to show what is possible when the boundary breaking nature of an OOB planet goes in the wrong direction. The comparison is also made to provide evidence that OOB planets are neither inherently good nor bad, their special energy is used according to the level of consciousness of a person. The use of well-known people rather than non-famous people is so that the general public is familiar with their life history and are able to see for themselves how the energy manifests in each case. It is important to note that having more OOB planets is not expected to incline one towards fame or infamy, to show this a sample of non-famous people is included. Each famous or infamous person is listed under each planet that they have out of bounds; some people are listed multiple times because they have multiple planets OOB. People who do not have any OOB planets are not listed at all. The non-famous people are not listed due to privacy reasons and because the general public is not familiar with their life history. The birth charts were obtained from Solar Fire astrological software and Rodden's Astro Data Bank and had at least a B rating on Rodden's Rating Scale. Information regarding Rodden's rating scale for accuracy of birth data can be found here.

It must be remembered that when analyzing a natal chart, there are multiple factors to be considered and modification of aspects is influential. Although it is the general rule that the further the declination, the more power the OOB planet has, this is only the case when all other planetary factors are equal. There are some notable extraneous circumstances to be kept in mind. For example someone with Venus at 24 degrees 10 minutes of a sign and features such as Venus closely conjunct an angle or Venus as an unaspected planet or having a stellium in the 2nd or 7th houses (Venus's houses) may display more prominence of Venusian traits than another person with Venus at 24 degrees 50 minutes but Venus does not possess any of the aforementioned features. This is the reason why a perfectly linear link between progressively higher declinations and strength of expression of a OOB planet is not expected.

Results

Out of 205 people, 111 (54.1%) have at least one out of bounds planet, 37 (18.0%) have exactly two OOB planets, 6 (3.0%) have exactly three OOB planets and 2 (1.0%) have exactly four OOB planets.

Famous: Out of 165 people, 91 (55.2%) have at least one out of bounds planet, 29 (17.6%) have exactly two OOB planets, 5 (3.0%) have exactly three OOB planets and 1 (0.006%) has exactly four OOB planets

Criminals: Out of 40 people, 20 (50%) have at least one out of bounds planet, 8 (20%) have exactly two OOB planets, 1 (2.5%) has exactly three OOB planets and 1 (2.5%) has exactly four OOB planets.

Non Famous: Out of 40 people, 22 (55%) have at least one out of bounds planet, 7 (17.5%) have exactly two OOB planets, 1 (2.5%) has exactly three OOB planets and 0 have exactly four OOB planets.
Update: In a random sample from my client files taken April 5th 2020, out of 75 people, 40 (53%) have at least one out of bounds planet, 11 (15%) have exactly two OOB planets, 2 (3%) have exactly 3 OOB planets and 0 have exactly four OOB planets.

In these samples, there was no one with Jupiter out of bounds. Therefore there will not be a discussion on its manifestation.

The percentages are very similar in the famous, non-famous and infamous populations suggesting that OOB planets are neither inherently good or bad, confirming that their special energy will be used according to the level of consciousness of any given person.

As expected there is not a perfectly linear link between progressively higher declinations and more extreme manifestations of any given OOB planet. However with all else being equal, the general relationship does show that higher declinations are associated with more stronger manifestations of energy.

Discussion

Moon

In turning our focus to the OOB Moon, I observe that qualities that this group of famous people have in common are very accurate intuition/ hunches, deep-seated need for freedom, capacity to inspire, high emotional intelligence, increased self-understanding, ability to freely dance to the beat of one's own drummer, value system different from society, people who are ahead of their time, great depth of emotion, penetrating insight into the human condition, and a high level of empathy and humanitarianism.

For example, Warren Buffett has given the vast majority of his wealth to charitable causes, he passionately believes in re-allocating his wealth in society rather than keeping the bulk of it in the hands of an elite few (1). He famously commented "I want to give my kids just enough so that they would feel that they could do anything, but not so much that they would feel like doing nothing" (1). He lives a frugal and simple lifestyle, for example he still lives in the same house he bought over 50 years ago, he drives himself everywhere and does not travel by private jet despite his immense wealth (2). His advice to young people includes not wearing name brands and remembering that money does not make a man, rather it is man who makes money (2).

Oprah Winfrey received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award for creating the Oprah's Angel Network, the Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (3). Her global humanitarian efforts target women, children and families in need. These organizations have been tremendously successful, collectively raising hundreds of millions of dollars (4). Over the years, Oprah has been very diligent and successful in using her influential role in media communications to uplift and inspire people. By showcasing many of our most brilliant thinkers, talented performers and inspirational people and situations she has inspired us all to reach for our highest potential. Through the Oprah Winfrey talk show, Oprah's Life Class and other programs on the OWN channel, her insight into the human condition and empathy for people has been displayed numerous times and has profoundly touched countless hearts.

On the negative extreme side Moon OOB can cause abnormal thoughts/ feelings, complete disregard for society's rules and regulations, insanity, extreme mood swings, low emotional intelligence, destructive habits, and a severe lack of sympathy/ empathy.

Venus

On the positive side OOB Venus indicates a very romantic nature, magnetism, charisma, special artistic and/or musical  talents, a discriminating eye for beauty, appreciation of creature comforts, extravagance, grandness, ability to entertain people, power of seduction, popularity, sensuality, charm, and grace. Cher is a prime example of the potential of Venus OOB. She has a prolific artistic career spanning five decades and at the current time is the only person to have won an Academy Award, a Grammy award, an Emmy award, three Golden Globe awards, and the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. She has sold more than 100 million solo albums and over 40 million records as Sonny & Cher worldwide. She is the only artist to have a number-one single on a Billboard chart in each of the past six decades. In addition to her acting and singing, she is a fashion designer, author, and manager of her own film production company, Isis (5).

Rudolph Valentino aka "the Latin Lover" was a world famous Italian actor known for his roles as the romantic hero in the silent era. He was the original male sex symbol; with his dark, mysterious good looks and sensually seductive manner, he made all the women swoon without saying a word! (6). He symbolized women's private fantasies and they fell in love with his character on screen. He said "women are not in love with me but with the picture of me on the screen. I am merely a canvas on which women paint their dreams" (7).

Liberace was a talented piano legend, remembered for his flamboyant shows, lifestyle and costumes. Globally, for multiple decades he was the highest paid entertainer. He was intensely ambitious and desired to be a piano virtuoso, therefore he spent very long hours practicing and perfecting his technique. His shows were designed to be memorable spectacles, using jewel encrusted grand pianos, multiple one of a kind, exotic costumes in a single show,  dramatic entrances and exits, a huge supporting cast (including cars and animals) and inviting audience members on stage to see and touch him and the set up close (8, 9). As characteristic of OOB Venus, Liberace was very proud of his earning ability and loved money! He often responded to poor reviews by saying "I cried all the way to the bank" and after doing a spectacle of a show telling the audience "I've had such a marvelous time I'm ashamed to take the money"--pause, wink, wink--"but I will" (8, 9). His over the top home features a musical theme and especially fancy is the piano shaped pool (with white and black keys!) in the backyard (10).

On the negative side, OOB Venus can indicate proclivity towards destructive lust, hedonism, envy, psychopathy, a materialistic nature, greediness, sexual sadism, elite snobbery, and over indulgence in "pleasures of the flesh"- alcohol/ sex/ drugs/ food. Ian Brady is a fitting example of the dangers of OOB Venus. Growing up, Brady displayed unusual pastimes such as reading Mein Kampf and other books on Nazi atrocities. Several sources say that he was violent towards animals. He is a criminally insane man who used a young woman as his accomplice to lure four children to harm. The accomplice Myra Hindley offered them a lift in the car or asked for their help with something to lure them, she used Venusian charm to get  the children to trust her. They were consequently left alone with Brady where they were sexually assaulted and murdered. The fifth murder was on a teenager who Brady beat to death with an axe and strangled. Brady is currently the longest serving prisoner in England, as his crime was so horrific that several people including Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales believe he should stay in prison until he dies (11).

Mars

On the positive side, Mars OOB can give generous amounts of ambition, courage, self confidence, masculine energy, daring, boldness, drive, physical vitality, passion, will power, stamina, adventure, and leadership ability. Katherine Hepburn is an excellent example of Mars OOB. Her unconventionality has been well documented: she refused to wear makeup off-screen, she did not give interviews, she refused to give autographs, she did not wear skirts, and in fact famously walked around in her underwear because the costume department stole her boyish slacks. There is no way anyone tells this headstrong lady what to do! She mischievously commented "if you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun!" (12). She is admired for her her independence, powerful voice, ability to go head to head with her male co-stars, her unapologetic honesty, and tell it like it is attitude. She was certainly daring; she insisted on doing all her own stunts because the stunt women never stood up straight enough (13). Katherine certainly made her mark on the world, she earned 12 Academy award nominations and won 4 of them for best actress, this record has never been beat (14). In addition, her 60 year long career has been filled with 44 feature films, 8 television movies, and 33 plays. Her enthusiasm, ambition and sense of adventure cannot be denied!

Frida Kahlo is an example of a very rare OOB Mars at 28 degrees. Frida was a famous Mexican painter, best known for her self portraits and works influenced by indigenous Mexican culture, realism, symbolism, and surrealism (15). Immediately striking is her masculine facial structure and features, she even had a mustache and unibrow!  Her 200 paintings are her autobiography: they all relate to her painful emotional and physical experiences and her passionate/ stormy relationship with her lover Diego Rivera (16). Recall that Mars represents a "me first" attitude, for good or for ill, people with a highlighted Mars are very much focused on themselves and their life experiences. Seeing things from other people's perspective does not come easily to them. Mars also represents the body, physical vitality, and stamina. When Frida was 6, she got Polio and her right leg and foot were permanently deformed, thus she had to hobble when walking. When she was 18, she was in a traffic accident that caused extreme injuries and left her immobile and in intense pain for months. During this time she was alone most of the time and painted numerous paintings of herself. She explains "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best"......"I never painted dreams....I painted my own reality" (17). Given the extent to which Mars is OOB in Frida's chart, it is no surprise that her body preoccupied her attention and that she underwent extreme suffering. She endured more than 35 operations, amputation of her right leg due to gangrene, had to terminate three pregnancies, and was confined to a hospital or bedridden for months at a time through the course of her entire life. (18). Frida was a remarkable woman, celebrated for her courage, endurance, passion, colorful character, and striking portraits that continue to fascinate us to this day.

I have one example of a Mars at 28 degrees in my client files. She admitted that she lacks motivation or ambition to do anything and this has been true all of her life. When home, she often sleeps for the vast majority of the day. She has tried several post-secondary programs but never completed any of them. There is a difficulty in sustaining a job for more than a few years because she feels bored, and there are long periods of unemployment in between jobs. She has never had a romantic partner. She relies on her family to financially support her although she is in her mid-thirties. It is difficult for her to formulate long-term goals and she realizes she lacks a realistic plan to achieve anything. She does not engage in any hobbies and stays home almost all of the time, having little need for close relationships or any social interaction.

There is also a much less pleasant manifestation of OOB Mars. Mars OOB can cause a person to be excessively aggressive, dangerously violent, rash, brutal, angry, impulsive, self centered, sexually sadistic, excessively forceful, and have a tendency to pick unprovoked fights. Patrick Kearney (also known as the freeway killer) is a serial killer who brutally murdered over 30 homosexual men and young boys. He had a predictable routine for the murders. After picking them up in his car and while driving he shot them, sexually assaulted the dead bodies, dismembered and mutilated the bodies and then dumped the body parts in trash bags along highways and desserts between Los Angeles and Mexico (19, 20).

Mercury

Positive qualities of OOB Mercury include extremely innovative thought processes; especially in fields such as literature, business, media, communications, broadcasting, technology, engineering, science, medicine, and math. There is eloquence, charisma in communication style, ability to engage an audience, very high intelligence and talent for communicating via the written word.  Louis Pasteur is an excellent example of OOB Mercury. It should be noted that Louis is the one person in the famous people sample to have four OOB planets and thus is definitely one of the most creative, out of the box thinkers in our history. He is a world famous microbiologist and chemist whose accomplishments included: discovering molecular asymmetry, saving the wine and beer industries from collapse with his discovery of pasteurization, providing persuasive evidence to refute the theory of spontaneous generation, solving France's silkworm crisis by devising a method to preserve healthy silkworm eggs and using germ theory to create vaccinations for anthrax, TB, chicken cholera, and and rabies (21, 23).  He was the first person to recognize variability in virulence, this has immensely contributed to our understanding of the emergence of several serious diseases (22). He is celebrated for his tenacity, the practical significance of his theories and his unwavering devotion to science. He said "science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world. Science is the highest personification of the nation because that nation will remain the first which carries the furthest the works of thought and intelligence" (23). With his ground-breaking ideas, penetrating observations and rigorous research methods, he has vastly improved quality of life and greatly reduced humanity's mortality rate. Among his many distinctions, he received  the Legion of Honour and numerous institutes, hospitals, schools, buildings and streets bear his name (22).

When Mercury goes OOB there is also the potential of extremely distorted/ twisted thought processes, hearing voices that aren't real, tendency to grossly misconstrue/ blow wildly out of proportion what other people say, weird/ disturbing obsessions, fixations, compulsive thinking, inability to read signals from other people, and speech impediments. Peter Sutcliffe has four out of bounds planets and is a prime example of what can happen when the extreme energy of OOB planets go in a negative direction. He is also known as the Yorkshire Ripper because he killed 13 prostitutes and attacked 7 others in West Yorkshire, England. He had an obsession with prostitutes and spent a large portion of his time in red light districts. He claims that he spoke with God frequently and that God ordered him to kill the prostitutes (24, 25). His Venus is also out of bounds which also contributes to his violent hatred of women and the fact that his crimes were sexual in nature. His distorted thought processes are reflected in his statement "the women I killed were filth - bastard prostitutes who were littering the streets. I was just cleaning up the place a bit" (26).

Charles Starkweather is another good example of Mercury OOB. As a child he had a speech impediment and was a slow learner.  He blew comments out of proportion; a notable example being that as an adult he recalled that he had "built up a hate that was as hard as iron after being called the bowlegged, redheaded woodpecker" in kindergarten (27). When he got older he developed a James Dean fixation after watching the movie "Rebel without a Cause", he identified with the defiant, misunderstood character and even patterned his hair and clothing to look like him. He was deeply disturbed at his family's low social status (his mom was a waitress and his dad was a carpenter who was not regularly employed) and while doing a series of unskilled, menial jobs came to the conclusion that he would never rise above his current station in life. As characteristic of the distortion of thinking processes of OOB Mercury, he thought the only way that he could ever be equal with the middle and upper class society he felt alienated him, was to kill them! He coldly remarked "dead people are all on the same level" (28). He also concluded that the only way to get money and respect was to resort to a life of crime. He later went on to murder 11 people during a 2 month road trip with his girlfriend (29).

Mark David Chapman is a very memorable example of OOB Mercury. He was convicted of killing John Lennon. He had an obsession with the book The Catcher in the Rye, fancying himself as Holden Caufield, the protagonist, he later claimed that this was his "statement" in killing John. He remained at the scene after the killing and was found reading this book by the police. When in trial, he claimed that God told him to plead guilty and that he would never appeal. When asked if he had anything to say he read a passage from the book (30). As found frequently in people with Mercury OOB, Mark blew comments out of proportion and misconstrued their meaning. In 1966 Lennon made a remark that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, consequently Mark and his Christian prayer group sang a twisted version of Imagine referring to Lennon being dead. In one song Lennon sang "imagine no possessions", Mark was resentful and angry because he felt that Lennon shouldn't have millions of dollars and luxurious possessions (30) if he was sincere in his words.

John Hinckley attempted but was unsuccessful at assassinating Ronald Reagan. Similar to the other criminals with Mercury OOB, he had a strange obsession with the film Taxi Driver in which the protagonist Travis Bickle plans to assassinate a presidential candidate. He became infatuated with Jodie Foster and actually moved to a new state to stalk her. He tried extreme tactics to impress her but failed to get her attention. As a result, he reasoned that if he killed the president, it would impress her (31).

Uranus

When one has Uranus OOB, there is potential to be eccentric/ bizzarre in both appearance and behaviour, have highly unique mannerisms and gestures, have the spirit of discovery, revolution, experimentation, and invention be very strong, have unbounded imagination and creativity, deeply cherish freedom of thought and action, and display rebellious behaviour. Salvador Dali was a famous Spanish surrealist painter, best remembered for his striking and bizarre images in photography, film and sculpture as well as his eccentric and grandiose behaviour. In his work he experimented with novel techniques such as optical illusions, negative space, visual puns, trompe lóeil visual effects, pointillism, enlarged half tone dot grids, stereoscopic images and holography (32). Physically, he liked to stand out from the crowd and with his long cape, walking stick, haughty/ manic expression and upturned wax mustache, he certainly did just that! Dali had several memorable quirks such as: speaking simultaneously in a combination of French, Spanish, English, and Catalan, keeping his fans' pens when signing autographs, avoiding paying the bill at restaurants by drawing on personal cheques (he correctly assumed the restaurant would keep it as a valued work of art rather than cashing it), speaking in the third person, and even giving a dead mouse as a gift! (32). He was intensely ambitious and passionate about his art. During his prolific career he produced over 1500 paintings as well as illustrations for books, designs for theatre sets and costumes, sculptures and an animated short film for Disney. Several modern artists have cited him as an inspiration and he has been portrayed in film (32).

Johannes Kepler is an excellent example of Uranus OOB's spirit of discovery and "firsts." His long list of notable accomplishments included: being the first person to accurately describe planetary motion with his three laws of planetary motion, founding modern optics, describing detailed magnification, discovering principles of how telescopes work, forming the basis of integral calculus, first to explain tides are caused by the moon, first to suggest the Sun rotates about its axis, first to derive the birth year of Christ, first to derive logarithms purely based on mathematics, and coining the term "satellite" (33, 34). I especially appreciate his harmonic analysis to music, astrology, and numerology, harmony resulted from the tones made by the souls of heavenly bodies (34). His rigorous research methods, talent for communicating his ideas through books, and particular excellence in science and math is likely due to his OOB Mercury.

On the flip side OOB Uranus can act purely for shock value rather than conviction, have a degenerative imagination, display extremely disturbing and unusual interests, become completely deranged, and partake in dangerous experimentation.  Ed Gein dug up dead bodies from graveyards and used their skin and bones to make souvenirs and trophies (35). When Uranus goes OOB its extreme bizarreness/ imagination can also take a major turn for the worse. To my knowledge, there has been no other person in history who has used human skin to cover chair seats, make jewelry and masks, hung lips on the window, used skulls to make bowls and to decorate bedposts and female nipples to make a belt! (35). He had an overpowering desire to become a woman and used some of these items in a transvestite ritual to dress himself so he could become a woman (36). His experimentation with the corpses included necrophilia and cannibalism (36).

Pluto

Pluto is by nature an extreme, boundary pushing planet that governs areas that are difficult to quantify and that are intensely personal/subjective such as the subconscious, death, rebirth, transcendence, transformation and evolution. This characteristic in addition to the fact that Pluto's effects are generational make it difficult for an outside observer to quantify its influence on specific lives. Pluto governs the underworld, degeneration, general criminal activity, large scale organized crime, terrorism and power abuse.

Conclusion

In studying OOB planets it is clear that the energy they give is one outside the normal confines of society's dominant thought/ behaviour. When found in criminal charts, it is clear that the nature of the crime is related to an extreme distortion of a specific planet's energy. However, when OOB planets are used constructively, they push the boundaries, blaze a new trail, are inspirational, come up with inventive, genius ideas, and have talents that are very well developed in the specific planet's domain. People with multiple OOB planets and further declination past 23 degrees, 27 minutes tend to feel "at odds" with society and are in fact visionaries who are ahead of their time. It might be hard for these people to fit into the society in which they live as their interests, values, motivation and behaviour are on a different playing field. Although they often feel misunderstood by most people, it is people with a high number of OOB planets that are society's most revolutionary thinkers. They often make immensely useful contributions to society even if they go unrecognized. Other people may disagree but I strongly believe that Louis Pasteur (with 4 OOB planets) made the most useful contribution to society compared to anyone else in the sample.  In addition to saving entire industries from collapse and therefore preventing France from a potential economic crisis, his theories and discoveries literally saved countless lives and vastly improved health related quality of life for all generations to come!  Perhaps the lesson to be learned from this study is in putting to practical use the opening quote by Henry David Thoreau. We should have respect and even admiration for people who dance to a different drummer because it is those people who often advance the level of consciousness of humanity the most.
